Rugby Union offers so much more to the betting community than the option to stake on the straight result. That market remains popular but this is a sport where shock outcomes are relatively rare so, for better value, many of our customers demand a wide range of prop bets.

Rugby’s Popularity in Australia
It’s stated that over half a million viewers tune in to watch the big Super Rugby games via subscription TV. Those figures are impressive enough and they underline the interest in the game, but the numbers can be boosted significantly by a live streaming service.
Rugby in Australia can trace its history back to 1863 when the first official club was set up at Sydney University. In the 1870s, the Southern Rugby Union was formed and competitions began to emerge across the country.
Popularity increased in the years that followed and rugby continued to gain a following in Australia. It might be fair to say that the rival code of rugby league attracts more interest and that’s understandable given that the Australian national side dominates that particular sport. However, the Wallabies have been world champions of rugby union too and that’s just one of the reasons why the 15 man game remains hugely popular all over Australia.
Known all over the world as the Wallabies, the Australian men’s rugby union side played their first ever international back in 1899. The match was against a combined British Isles team and a 13-3 victory set Australia off on their winning ways.
The team has a rich and successful history and, in any calendar year, there are a number of international matches to bet on. Along with New Zealand, Australia and Argentina, the Wallabies compete in an annual tournament known as the Rugby Championship. The All Blacks have dominated the tournament over the years but Australia claimed their fourth Rugby Championship title in 2015 and are always competitive.
Australian rugby union sides can also be found competing in a series of games which are generally known as the Autumn Internationals. These are ‘friendly’ matches where the majority of rugby playing nations come together and each will play around four to five games. Those matches can be played towards the end of the calendar year, so technically it’s Australia’s spring but the term ‘Autumn Internationals’ defines these games.
Unibet TV will pick up Australia’s regular internationals and, of course, we will be there when the big global tournament comes along.
Rugby World Cup
The very first Rugby Union World Cup was held in 1987 and that’s relatively late when compared with other global tournaments. When the 2019 competition in Japan came to its conclusion, there had been nine editions of the Rugby Union World Cup and it is now established as a four-yearly fixture on the sporting calendar.
Australia have a strong record in the tournament and the Wallabies have won the World Cup on two previous occasions. The first of those victories came in 1991 when the great David Campese played his part in a tournament which concluded with a 12-6 victory over England in the final.
In 1995, the defending champions were knocked out in the semi finals but the Wallabies were on top of the world again just four years later. In the 1999 tournament in Wales, Australia recorded an emphatic, 35-12 win over France in the final.
Since that 1999 triumph, the Wallabies have been runners up on two previous occasions but the nation still waits for its third victory. Australian sides will always be in contention whenever the global tournament comes along and you can rely on Unibet to provide extensive betting markets and live streaming to back it up.
Super Rugby AU
Super Rugby AU came along as a new tournament in 2020 and it stepped in as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. With the suspension of the traditional Super Rugby season, the new tournament featured just five teams - The Brumbies, The Reds, The Waratahs, Western Force and The Rebels.
For an audience starved of sporting action at the time, Super Rugby AU proved to be a big hit and, as the campaign progresses, Unibet TV will be relaying the best of the action to your screens.
The traditional format of Super Rugby may well return in the future but, whatever the game offers, Unibet are there to back it up in two ways. Firstly, there is that extensive set of betting markets for all rugby union matches and we have Unibet TV on hand so you don’t have to miss any of the action.
Australian rugby union takes centre stage but don’t forget that there is some great domestic and international action on hand from all over the world, so log on or sign up to make sure you can enjoy the live stream.
